Performance crysis
I can see value in craft.
Not in craft for the sake of craft. Not in the purism of the human touch, nor in the kind of nostalgia that simply reminds us of our nature.
What I truly believe in is our ability to compound ideas over time.
We’ll keep accumulating lines of code. For a few more years at least. Manual work tends to optimize itself, always searching for the fastest path. Because that’s what we do. We’re wired to save energy.
There’s an emergent value to repetition. We call it mastery.
We mastered agriculture. Building. Carpentry. We’ve improved our wellbeing through repetition, through thousands of tiny decisions and unconscious glimpses of a better way.
Because when we do things by hand, we optimize. We naturally keep searching for how to do more with less.
The value doesn’t emerge when we reach the goal. It emerges from repeatedly choosing, well or poorly, the next definition that gets us closer to it.
And still, we say the user will review the output.
